Greeley’s longest continuously operating community theatre company has changed its name to The Stampede Troupe, according to Board President Noel Johnston. Founded in 1974 by Jim DeMersseman, Kent Smith, and the late Harold Hamler, the group was originally called The Greeley Independence Stampede Troupe, a reflection of its summer musical productions; in 2002, the name was changed to Greeley Community Theatre Troupe.  Johnston stated that the new name “will help us connect better to our 35 year history, and, we hope, will be more easily recognized by local theatre going citizens, many of whom seemed to think that we had disappeared six years ago when we first changed our name.”

Virtually everyone connected with the company “had been referring to it as ‘The Stampede Troupe’ anyway,” Johnston said. “The term ‘stampede’ is also strongly identifiable with Greeley,” he continued, “and we’re proud of our place in the arts community of this city.” Johnston indicated that The Troupe will continue to offer high quality, varied theatre opportunities for performers, technicians, and audiences of all ages.  With a revitalized board of 13 members, The Stampede Troupe will be offering the musical “1776” in September, “Miracle on 34th Street” in December, and “I Hate Hamlet” in March. Plans for a new playwrights’ festival, and a children’s theatre academy are also in the developmental stages, Johnston said.

Congratulations GCTT Parade Entry E-mail

The Greeley Community Theatre Troupe entered a float in The Greeley Stampede Parade, July 4, 2008 and won the Freedom Award. The Freedom Award is given for Best Presentation of Parade Theme. Tickets for 1776 go on sale Monday, July 7, 2008 at the UCCC box office 970-356-5000.

The Greeley Community Theatre Troupe invites you and your students to our production of the Tony-Award winning musical 1776. The representatives from the thirteen original colonies grapple with the threat of an expanding war with England, the individual needs of each colony, and their own fears as they create a new country, based on a system of government never before tried.  This musical is an entertaining account of the brave and visionary men who fought against tyranny (and among themselves) for an idea – democracy.

Denver is hosting the Democratic Convention in August, and we have a presidential election in November – what an exciting time to focus on our nation’s birth.  Veteran Troupe director Diane Cays from UNC’s College of Performing and Visual Arts is delighted to bring her one of her favorite periods in American history to the stage.

Please join us as we bring the most significant event in nation’s history to the stage.
